History of the Churches

Christ Church

A Grade 2 listed building, was built in 1861-2 and designed by the architect Benjamin Ferrey. The church was one of many churches to be built as a response to the Oxford Movement, which helped to re-establish catholic theology and style of worship within the Church of England. The worship in the church continues to reflect the vision of its founders.

St John the Evangelist

designed by T Marsh Nelson, has at its front a striking five bay portico of ionic fluted columns. It was originally built in 1842 as a Chapel of Ease for Holy Trinity, Clapham. The interior was re-ordered in 1986. The worship space was made smaller and limited to the east end of the church. A hall with kitchen, offices, lavatories and storage was created out of the remaining space. This, with the extensive crypt, is now used as a base for the St John’s Community Development Project .

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the Gospel message to all who live and work within our parish boundaries. We achieve this by:

  • Providing regular opportunities for the community to come together in worship around the altar.
  • Offering practical, pastoral and spiritual care to all, members of our congregation or not.
  • Enabling people to explore their faith through engaging preaching and teaching about our faith at all levels and ages.
  • Caring for people at every stage of their lives, from birth to marriage to death.
  • Working with key service providers in the parish through projects related to the church, namely Springfield Community Flat, St John’s Community Development Flat and Union Grove Community Nursery.
