A vibrant, living church

Engaging with and serving the community, both on an individual basis and as a whole.

We aim to be a vibrant, living church that's a joy to visit and which embraces and truly seeks to serve all members of our community.

You can therefore access a very wide range of services and activities to ensure that all community members feel included, respected and cared for.

Below is a summary of some of these key areas of our work. But do please talk to us in person or call our parish office if you would like further information about anything, or indeed would like to volunteer your help. Some of our work is sensitive, so you can always expect us to treat your enquiry in complete confidence.

Outreach projects

St. Johns Community Development Project

St. John’s Community Development Project is based in St. John the Evangelist Church and the project serves the local community by providing a wide range of activities and events every week for senior citizens.

Weekly activities include an exercise class. People friendships are offered through recreational activities, a choir and a social drop-in afternoon.

Springfield Community Flat

People of all ages benefit from the range of activities offered by Springfield Community Flat especially those who may not be able to access these services for themselves. These include refugees and asylum seekers and those who are lonely or marginalised. We offer early years care daily with three graduates and 12 other staff with fully qualified bilingual workers, breakfast and after school club, play schemes and ESOL classes. Advice is given in a range of areas and a food bank function can be collected twice a week. Springfield Community Flat is a charity and not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, for more information, telephone 020 7720 2699.

Stewart’s Road Adventure Playground and Youth Centre

We have sessions for your young people age 8 and above at Stewart’s Road Adventure Playground and Youth Centre, we offer holiday and half-term play schemes and work with young people 13 – 19 years.

Union Grove Community Nursery

We believe diversity adds value and is something to be celebrated, therefore, our focus is on meeting the individual needs of the child. Union Grove Community Nursery delivers high quality childcare together with an excellent service in early years provision.

Accommodating the homeless

We have happily volunteered our church to be part of The Robes Project. This helps homeless people by giving them a safe, warm place to sleep, a hot meal and support as they start to rebuild their lives. Participating churches offer temporary night shelter during the winter months from November to April of each year for 15 to 20 guests each night. See calendar for details.

Children and Sunday School

On Sundays there is provision for Christian teaching and nurture for both senior and junior school children. Find out more about our Policies, Procedures and Guidelines for Safeguarding.

Food Bank and Fairtrade

We run a Food Bank every Wednesday from 12:00 noon. We challenge excessive waste. We promote fair trade and have a Fairtrade Stall every Sunday. We aim to be energy efficient, safeguarding the integrity of Creation.

Citizens UK

We are actively engaged with London Citizens particularly in Lambeth working with other organisations to build the Kingdom in our local area.

Other activities

Community activities include a monthly lunch after Sunday worship and a seasonal gardening morning, please see our regular notices.

Our outward focus is reflected in active support for our mission partners such as Christian Aid, Medical Aid for Palestinians, the Bishop of Southwark’s Lent Appeal, Syrian child refugees and more.
